While I was in Florida I decided to photograph some of the colorful vintage buildings. On a lark I loaded a roll of Revolog film into my Nikon. I did not know what to expect from this niche film with baked in lightning streaks and other light leaks features. Getting the negatives back today was sure a lot of fun. I was musing today about why I still shoot film. The images from a long expired roll of Fuji C200 got me a ‘wonderin. The roll, sent to me by James Tocchio of Casual Photophile when he had his film club going, was a big disappointment. The colors were muddy, the shadows were green. That roll cemented that I will never shoot expired film again. Then the sixth dimension came to mind. When I shoot with my digital camera, there are five central variables. The camera, the lens, aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Film gives me the sixth dimension. Every emulsion has a unique character that adds a layer of frivolity and thoughtfulness compared to the clinical experience of digital photography. Revolog is an extreme example of the sixth dimension. This extra dimension is why I shoot film.
Really interesting lightning patterns and the photos would be beautiful even without them. Nice variations of colors in each photo.
Hi Kendra, coming from you it is much appreciated. When I was photographing the spa, the proprietor, an Asian woman, came outside and asked if I wanted to buy the building! I said no, I just take pictures. This film is made in Europe, and there are several different emulsions with varying effects. I am divided on whether I will shoot any more Revolog because the random effects are not my contribution to the image. I must say though, I feel I did capture the mood of what the inventor’s intended by the choice of subjects and lighting. It is all about the light as you so clearly know. On another note, I spoke to Butch L and the migration to the northeast is delayed from the cold weather.
