I took these shots today underneath the Providence River Bridge at the site of the Hurricane Barrier, built in the hope averting repeat of the devastating flood in the City of Providence from the 1938 Hurricane. Many buildings in the downtown area still bear symbols showing the high water mark from that storm. This will probably save the City, but unfortunately, all the water will likely back up into my front yard to the South!
I believe this is part of the hydraulic pump system that opens and closes the barrierThe barrier is a massive element, behind it are the smokestacks from the Narragansett Electric Company, ironically now known to be one of the reasons we need the barrier more fervently today.Tugboats stand at rest in the Providence River, waiting to shepherd cargo ships into Providence’s working waterfront in the background.
