Circuses and Memories Gone By

I have been photographing at the antique barn at Tiverton Four Corners for many years. The objects there are constantly changing. There has been a World War II spy plane in the yard, a torpedo shell, remnants of a Ferris wheel, old fashioned bumper cars, old military service uniforms and combat gear, violins, one armed bandits. The memories are endless. Today, I found a fascinating collection of vintage pictures and objects from an 19th or early 20 century circus. One wonders whether (and hopes) props were used to adorn an extra arm from the leg of the little boy shown in one of the pictures. I never thought I would see one, never mind a whole collection of prosthetic eyeballs (bloodshot and all)! A two headed duck? When the portrait was taken of the young man, it was meant to preserve his likeness and memory. Who was this young man? Today, the portrait sits in the farthest corner of the store obscured by shadows.

I go back so often because it is great fun, and there is a wonderful cafe nearby. I have always loved observing old and abandoned things. They set the imagination ablaze….
